FBI DIRECTOR INFORMS SERRANO OF TASK FORCE
Washington, D.C., March 21 – –
In a letter to Congressman Jose E.
Serrano (D-NY), FBI Director Louis J. Freeh today informed him a task force is
being formed to explore the agency’s alleged role in an operation to discredit and persecute the independence movement in Puerto Rico.
“This letter is another step toward getting answers to questions that have
concerned many people for many years,” Serrano said. “My hope is that this
task force will reveal an important chapter of our history so people can make their own judgements.”
In the March 17 letter, Freeh said he decided to form a task force to locate, process, and release any relevant records available about this issue
after Serrano asked questions at a hearing March 16.
“What happens after this is anybody’s guess, but it is an important start,”
Serrano said. “At the minimum, we need to know what happened and who was targeted.”
Freeh was referring to the FBI’s budget hearing before the Commerce, Justice, State, Judiciary and Related Agencies Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee, which funds federal agencies. During the hearing, Serrano, Ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee, asked Freeh what role the FBI and other federal agencies played in discrediting and persecuting the independence movement from the 1950s to the 1970s, which Serrano called one of the darkest periods in the history of the relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States. He also asked if in the process the FBI was involved in violent acts and, particularly, if the FBI played any role in torturing the leader of the independence movement, Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos, while he was in prison.
In response to Serrano’s questions, Freeh said Serrano’s question goes
back to a period, particularly in the 1960s when the FBI did operate what was
known as the COINTELPRO, a program that did tremendous destruction to many people in the country, to the FBI, and to Puerto Rico. Freeh said the FBI has taken some steps to notify people in Puerto Rico who were the subjects of these investigations and dossiers to make those files available to them.
Freeh also said he would pursue the Congressman’s questions and followup with him.
Serrano’s comments came after the Puerto Rico Senate passed a resolution March 14 calling for a probe into the federal government’s role in the creation of political dossiers on members of the Indepedence Party. The Puerto Rican government also has established a fund to compensate people targeted by this operation for their losses.
“I intend to ask Freeh to seek the advice of Senator Manuel Rodriguez
Orellana of the Puerto Rican Independence Party and others who continue to be very helpful to me in this process,” Serrano said.

After the hearing yesterday and in response to your concerns, I instructed that a task force be formed within the FBI to locate, process and release any relevant records we may have about the issue you raised. The process of doing that began today.

“HISTERICO Y paranoico” fueron sólo dos de los adjetivos usados por el
representante independentista Víctor García San Inocencio para describir al
comisionado residente Carlos Romero Barceló y sus ataques contra el fenecido
líder nacionalista Pedro Albizu Campos.
“Romero, en el ocaso de su carrera política, se ha vuelto histérico y
paranoico y ve, hasta en la sopa que se toma, hay conspiraciones nacionalistas”, dijo García San Inocencio en un comunicado de prensa que circuló por el Capitolio ayer tarde. “Es deprimente como este señor ha logrado apoderarse de la línea ideológica del Partido Nuevo Progresista logrando revivir el carpeteo ideológico y el miedo enfermizo a la
independencia entre los sectores más derechistas de ese partido”, agregó el
legislador electo por el Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño. Romero
Barceló criticó severamente que los organizadores del Desfile Puertorriqueño
de Nueva York hayan dedicado el Desfile de este año a Albizu Campos, acusando
al líder nacionalista de ser fascista y promover la violencia.
GARCIA SAN Inocencio dijo que las ultimas declaraciones de Romero Barceló
contra Albizu Campos en Ponce, escena de un enfrentamiento en que la Policía
insular asesinó a 19 nacionalistas e hirió a otros 100 que desfilaban en una
procesión del Domingo de Ramos hace 63 años en lo que hoy se conoce como la
Masacre de Ponce, fueron “una afrenta triple”.
“Primero a la figura de Albizu, segundo a la Ciudad Señorial que recuerda esa
pesadilla en su historia y tercero a la nación puertorriqueña entera que
lamenta el deceso de esos mártires que murieron por ondear una bandera que no
es la de Romero, que por cierto su gobierno ha sido el más represivo desde

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Lawyer Oscar Moscoso says that when he joined 80,000 other Puerto Ricans in a march last month demanding that the U.S. Navy surrender its bombing range in Vieques, he proved just how American he is.
Like most of the four million people in this U.S. commonwealth, Moscoso speaks only Spanish and no English, defines his nationality as Puerto Rican and refers to the Caribbean island as his `country.’
“But if we had really seen the Navy as a foreign power, blood would have flowed, Moscoso, 34, said last week.
“We marched peacefully because we are responsible U.S. citizens.
Initially portrayed as a sign of rising Puerto Rican nationalism and a body blow to advocates of U.S. statehood, the Vieques march Feb. 21 has instead come to symbolize the dual — and often dueling — Puerto Rican and U.S. identities of most people on this island.
“This is a mixture that doesn’t make sense to a lot of outsiders, but we are Puerto Ricans who treasure our U.S. citizenship. We are Latin Americans, as well as part of the United States, historian Alex Maldonado said.
Proof of their argument, political leaders and analysts said, is that
another 80,000 people waving U.S. flags turned out for a counterdemonstration March 5 sponsored by Puerto Rico’s pro-statehood Gov. Pedro Rossello to show their “Americanness.
“This is the story of Puerto Rico — a ship adrift in a sea of contradictions, newspaper columnist Frank Ramos wrote. “As Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter might say, `We seem to be moving in all
directions at once, which is to say, we’re moving in no direction at all.’ ”
If ever an issue could have driven a wedge between the Puerto Ricans’ twin identities, it is Vieques, an island east of Puerto Rico that the Navy has used for 50 years for airplane bombing and naval gunnery practice.
A LAST STRAW
Long-simmering accusations that the bombs polluted the air and water, made many of Vieques’ 9,300 residents sick and kept them poor by driving away tourism boiled over in April when a stray bomb killed a civilian guard on the range.
Scores of protesters are squatting on the range to block more bombings, and Navy demands for their arrest exacerbated charges that it still behaves like a colonial occupier, 101 years after the Spanish-American War.
Adding to the emotional charge, the dispute came as Puerto Ricans basked in nationalist pride over the success of countrymen, with Ricky Martin topping music charts, boxer Felix Trinidad winning the world welterweight crown and Bernie Williams, Ricky Ledee and Jorge Posada helping the New York Yankees to the World Series.
Yet polls show that while the overwhelming majority of Puerto Ricans
want the Vieques range closed, the dispute has had no visible impact on the decades-old virtual tie between those who favor continued commonwealth status and statehood.
`AMERICAN WAY’
“I am pro-Vieques and maybe anti-Navy. But I am not anti-American, Moscoso said as he lunched at a McDonald’s. “In New York, if you protest against the mayor, are you anti-American? That’s the American way, no?
Critics say Rossello’s complaints that the Feb. 21 march was “anti-American” and his counterdemonstration were in fact designed to pump up his New Progressive Party in advance of November
gubernatorial and legislative elections.
The latest poll by the El Nuevo Dia gave San Juan Mayor Sila Calderon of the pro-commonwealth Popular Democratic Party 44 percent of the vote in November gubernatorial elections and Carlos Pesquera of Rossello’s New Progressive Party 30 percent.
ANTI-INCUMBENT
But political analysts say the gap is largely the result of voter discontent with the high levels of crime and corruption that have marked Rossello’s two terms in office. Rossello is not seeking reelection.
Polls give Puerto Rican Independence Party leader Ruben Berrios, who has become almost an icon of the Vieques struggle after squatting on the range since May, the same 5 to 6 percent support that he has enjoyed for the past 10 years.
‘`Vieques is a very important issue, but I don’t think it’s one that is affecting either Puerto Rican identity or the November elections, Ramos said in an interview.
Most analysts blame Rossello himself for whipping up the Vieques controversy, taking the lead in demanding that the Navy close the bombing range and even declaring to a U.S. congressional committee hearing in Washington that he would allow “not one more bomb on
Vieques.
STACKED PANEL
He created a commission to study the issue and packed it with known supporters of closing the range — including Lolita Lebron, a
pro-independence firebrand who shot up the U.S. Congress in 1954 — who recommended a total Navy withdrawal from “The Baby Island.
But Rossello broke with the majority of Puerto Ricans in January, negotiating a deal with President Clinton under which the Navy could use inert “dummy bombs for two years and must close the range
completely in 2003.
The deal is subject to a referendum of Vieques residents, but the Roman Catholic Church has come out against it, sponsoring the Feb. 21 march.

PRECEDIDO POR un intenso movimiento de helicópteros navales, reuniones entre
la Policía y los Alguaciles Federales y reforzado por declaraciones de altos
funcionarios del Gobierno, ayer corrieron como pólvora los informes de que las autoridades federales removerán antes del jueves el escudo humano que
hasta ahora ha impedido la reanudación de las prácticas de la Marina en Vieques.
Aunque los informes, provenientes de fuentes de distintos niveles dentro del
Gobierno de Puerto Rico, apuntaban a que los alguaciles federales y el personal de la Marina sólo intervendrían con los manifestantes frente al Camp García, otras fuentes -no gubernamentales – se preguntaban si esto sería una estrategia para desviar la atención mientras son removidos los manifestantes en los campos de tiro.
El momento escogido para el desalojo casi coincidiría con el primer
aniversario, el 19 de abril del año pasado, de la muerte del guardia civil
David Sanes, quien falleció por un error de un piloto que realizaba prácticas
con bombas vivas y dejó caer una de éstas sobre el Puesto de Observación I en el Camp García.
Como en ocasiones anteriores, el superintendente de la Policía, Pedro Toledo, aseguró que la Policía no va a participar en la remoción de manifestantes en terreno federal y recalcó que esa labor recae sobre los federales, particularmente sobre la ofi
cina de los alguaciles.
“NOSOTROS NO sabemos ni tenemos fecha ni se nos ha informado fecha ninguna de
cuándo si va a haber arrestos o remociones”, dijo al recalcar que la labor de la Policía será garantizar que el acceso al Camp García no sea obstruido en la parte que pertenece al Gobierno estatal.
A pesar de su cautela al hablar, la información que ofreció de una reunión
reciente con el jefe de los alguaciles en Puerto Rico, Herman Wirshing, y de
otra reunión “de cortesía” con el oficial naval Kevin Green -encargado de
poner en vigor las directrices presidenciales que permiten la reanudación de los bombardeos – sólo abonó a robustecer las versiones sobre la inminencia de arrestos o remoción de los manifestantes.
FUENTES DEL Gobierno insistieron ayer en que no se removería a los desobedientes en los campos de tiro y que la Marina sólo se propone desalojar a los manifestantes que han ocupado una franja de terreno federal frente al portón de Camp García y extender la verja hasta los límites de la propiedad federal. La fecha señalada, antes del jueves, se debe a que durante los fines de semana aumenta la presencia en Vieques de estudiantes, visitantes y actividades antibélicas.
Los manifestantes frente a Camp García, aunque en terreno federal, no
obstaculizan directamente las prácticas de tiro, que se realizan en la zona
de impacto al este de Vieques, donde ubica, entre otros, el campamento del
presidente del Partido Independentista, Rubén Berríos.
Previo a los informes de ayer, la Marina informó que se propone realizar
ejercicios militares en mayo pero no ha indicado si sería sobre suelo viequense.
Los vuelos comerciales sobre partes de la Isla Nena se restringieron
nuevamente y hay un creciente movimiento de helicópteros sobre los campamentos.
Una intervención de las autoridades en esta fecha parece coincidir con el
aniversario de la muerte de David Sanes
Toledo aceptó que estaría impedido de revelar o confirmar si hubiera alguna
movilización federal en los campamentos esta semana. No obstante, puntualizó:
“Si hubiera alguna, yo desconozco. A nosotros no nos han informado que vaya a
haber alguna movilización en los campamentos”.
De ordinario, es común ver cerca del lugar donde falleció Sanes un helicóptero que llegue dos veces al día con personal para reemplazar al que
se encuentran de servicio. Ayer, una fuente de El Nuevo Día dijo que vio
llegar más de cinco helicópteros con personal, que sólo dejaban gente y no
retiraban a nadie.
SIN EMBARGO, confrontado con las versiones de mayor movimiento en Camp
García, el portavoz de la Marina en la base Roosevelt Roads, Roberto Nelson,
dijo que “lo único” que podía responder es que cualquier plan de desalojo de
los desobedientes civiles lo llevarán a cabo las agencias federales de ley y
orden, pero que “personalmente” no tiene “ningún conocimiento” de una
operación inminente.
Por su parte, Wirshing, quien en el pasado ha reconocido que su oficina
tendría un papel protagónico en cualquier operación de esta naturaleza, no estuvo disponible cuando El Nuevo Día intentó comunicarse con él en horas de
la tarde.
Mientras tanto, el teniente William Sierra Maya, director de la Unidad de
Saturación de la Policía en Carolina, descartó rumores de que efectivos de su
división vayan a ser enviados a Vieques en el transcurso de esta semana.
“YO AQUI no he recibido ninguna instrucción sobre eso. Hasta el momento todo sigue normal”, indicó el teniente policiaco.

WASHINGTON – Presintiendo que “esta vez podría llegar el lobo”, el Fondo
Puertorriqueño de Educación y Servicios Legales en la Ciudad de Nueva York
solicitó una reunión con la secretaria de Justicia, Janet Reno, para pedirle
que se abstenga de dar la orden de arrestos y evite más tragedias en la Isla Nena.
La reunión fue solicitada mediante carta por el director ejecutivo del Fondo,
el licenciado Juan Figueroa. Este espera reunirse con Reno a principios de
este mes, junto a un grupo de defensores de Vieques en los Estados Unidos, se
indicó.
La concejal puertorriqueña de Nueva York, Margarita López, dijo ayer que ha
escuchado que los arrestos son inminentes. Comentó que los bombardeos Unitas que las fuerzas navales realizarán desde el viernes a 12 millas de Vieques son el principio del regreso de la Marina a Vieques. “Eso es una amenaza al pueblo puertorriqueño. Es su forma de empezar los bombardeos”, expresó López. Esta tiene que comparecer hoy martes a una corte en Nueva York para responder por su desobediencia civil a favor de Vieques. La Casa Blanca refirió anoche al Departamento de Justicia federal las preguntas sobre si en estos días habría arrestos de los desobedientes civiles en el área restringida de Vieques. Al cierre de esta edición, Justicia no había emitido comentarios.
Una fuente federal dijo que los rumores de los arrestos o de remoción de los
desobedientes no son más que rumores. Pero aceptó que Justicia podría
mantener bien callada la orden de arrestos o de remoción. La Marina asistiría en el operativo. El secretario de la Marina, Richard Danzig, se encuentra en Japón desde hace una semana y regresa la semana próxima.
LOS ALGUACILES encontrarían casa llena si arrestan en estos días en Vieques.
Todavía están en Vieques parte de los participantes de la caravana del fin de
semana. En el grupo está el concejal de Nueva York, José Rivera, quien organiza la presencia viequense en el Desfile Nacional Puertorriqueño de Nueva York.
López dijo que el viernes llevará a Puerto Rico a 100 personas de Nueva York. Muchos de esos solidarios son judíos, afroamericanos y de orígenes étnicos no puertorriqueño. “Si nos arrestan vamos a dejarnos arrestar y que sea lo que Dios quiera. Si nos sueltan volvemos a entrar. Aquí no hay caminos para atrás”, dijo. En Washington siguen los preparativos para la concentración de miles de personas frente a la Casa Blanca para conmemorar el aniversario de
la muerte del guardia de seguridad David Sanes Rodríguez. Participarán 30
organizaciones que traer n gente en guaguas, aviones y carros de m s de 20
ciudades.

What are we stateside Ricans going to do when the arrests start? I’m wondering when they are going to begin attacking and ejecting those who are encamped along the target range? Will they wait for Semana Santa?

We will sit on our Culo’s just like we have done in the past when they arrest and kill our families. It seems that our community members are more concerned with self-preservation and not long term salvation. Why do you think the US has gotten away for so many years bombing US citizens, cause only a few are making a ruckus. If we were really organized and care for the community, if would be a cultural sin to be for “Statehood” based on the complete knowledge of what is Puerto Rico’s history. I feel bad for the people of Vieques and all those who have struggled hard. How come no one is bringing a class action suit against the US for destruction of the environment? Money talks, sue them and watch results happen…. Clinton’s a clown and we are really blind if we believe that there is a difference between his ideals and the Republicans. Its all about the money and Vieques is a cash cow for the military! You want to see action, Boycott the military, don’t let Latino youth join their ranks cause they are hurting for numbers right now. A good old fashion boycott, with current protest and some lawsuits, particularly in international courts should put a scare in them.

Puerto Rico bomb issue a symbol of dual identity

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Lawyer Oscar Moscoso says that when he joined 80,000 other Puerto Ricans in a march last month demanding that the U.S. Navy surrender its bombing range in Vieques, he proved just how American he is.
Like most of the four million people in this U.S. commonwealth, Moscoso speaks only Spanish and no English, defines his nationality as Puerto Rican and refers to the Caribbean island as his `country.’
“But if we had really seen the Navy as a foreign power, blood would have flowed, Moscoso, 34, said last week.
“We marched peacefully because we are responsible U.S. citizens.
Initially portrayed as a sign of rising Puerto Rican nationalism and a body blow to advocates of U.S. statehood, the Vieques march Feb. 21 has instead come to symbolize the dual — and often dueling — Puerto Rican and U.S. identities of most people on this island.
“This is a mixture that doesn’t make sense to a lot of outsiders, but we are Puerto Ricans who treasure our U.S. citizenship. We are Latin Americans, as well as part of the United States, historian Alex Maldonado said.
Proof of their argument, political leaders and analysts said, is that
another 80,000 people waving U.S. flags turned out for a counterdemonstration March 5 sponsored by Puerto Rico’s pro-statehood Gov. Pedro Rossello to show their “Americanness.
“This is the story of Puerto Rico — a ship adrift in a sea of contradictions, newspaper columnist Frank Ramos wrote. “As Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter might say, `We seem to be moving in all
directions at once, which is to say, we’re moving in no direction at all.’ ”
If ever an issue could have driven a wedge between the Puerto Ricans’ twin identities, it is Vieques, an island east of Puerto Rico that the Navy has used for 50 years for airplane bombing and naval gunnery practice.
A LAST STRAW
Long-simmering accusations that the bombs polluted the air and water, made many of Vieques’ 9,300 residents sick and kept them poor by driving away tourism boiled over in April when a stray bomb killed a civilian guard on the range.
Scores of protesters are squatting on the range to block more bombings, and Navy demands for their arrest exacerbated charges that it still behaves like a colonial occupier, 101 years after the Spanish-American War.
Adding to the emotional charge, the dispute came as Puerto Ricans basked in nationalist pride over the success of countrymen, with Ricky Martin topping music charts, boxer Felix Trinidad winning the world welterweight crown and Bernie Williams, Ricky Ledee and Jorge Posada helping the New York Yankees to the World Series.
Yet polls show that while the overwhelming majority of Puerto Ricans
want the Vieques range closed, the dispute has had no visible impact on the decades-old virtual tie between those who favor continued commonwealth status and statehood.
`AMERICAN WAY’
“I am pro-Vieques and maybe anti-Navy. But I am not anti-American, Moscoso said as he lunched at a McDonald’s. “In New York, if you protest against the mayor, are you anti-American? That’s the American way, no?
Critics say Rossello’s complaints that the Feb. 21 march was “anti-American” and his counterdemonstration were in fact designed to pump up his New Progressive Party in advance of November
gubernatorial and legislative elections.
The latest poll by the El Nuevo Dia gave San Juan Mayor Sila Calderon of the pro-commonwealth Popular Democratic Party 44 percent of the vote in November gubernatorial elections and Carlos Pesquera of Rossello’s New Progressive Party 30 percent.
ANTI-INCUMBENT
But political analysts say the gap is largely the result of voter discontent with the high levels of crime and corruption that have marked Rossello’s two terms in office. Rossello is not seeking reelection.
Polls give Puerto Rican Independence Party leader Ruben Berrios, who has become almost an icon of the Vieques struggle after squatting on the range since May, the same 5 to 6 percent support that he has enjoyed for the past 10 years.
‘`Vieques is a very important issue, but I don’t think it’s one that is affecting either Puerto Rican identity or the November elections, Ramos said in an interview.
Most analysts blame Rossello himself for whipping up the Vieques controversy, taking the lead in demanding that the Navy close the bombing range and even declaring to a U.S. congressional committee hearing in Washington that he would allow “not one more bomb on
Vieques.

He created a commission to study the issue and packed it with known supporters of closing the range — including Lolita Lebron, a
pro-independence firebrand who shot up the U.S. Congress in 1954 — who recommended a total Navy withdrawal from “The Baby Island.
But Rossello broke with the majority of Puerto Ricans in January, negotiating a deal with President Clinton under which the Navy could use inert “dummy bombs for two years and must close the range
completely in 2003.
The deal is subject to a referendum of Vieques residents, but the Roman Catholic Church has come out against it, sponsoring the Feb. 21 march.

PRECEDIDO POR un intenso movimiento de helicópteros navales, reuniones entre
la Policía y los Alguaciles Federales y reforzado por declaraciones de altos
funcionarios del Gobierno, ayer corrieron como pólvora los informes de que las autoridades federales removerán antes del jueves el escudo humano que
hasta ahora ha impedido la reanudación de las prácticas de la Marina en Vieques.
Aunque los informes, provenientes de fuentes de distintos niveles dentro del
Gobierno de Puerto Rico, apuntaban a que los alguaciles federales y el personal de la Marina sólo intervendrían con los manifestantes frente al Camp García, otras fuentes -no gubernamentales – se preguntaban si esto sería una estrategia para desviar la atención mientras son removidos los manifestantes en los campos de tiro.
El momento escogido para el desalojo casi coincidiría con el primer
aniversario, el 19 de abril del año pasado, de la muerte del guardia civil
David Sanes, quien falleció por un error de un piloto que realizaba prácticas
con bombas vivas y dejó caer una de éstas sobre el Puesto de Observación I en el Camp García.
Como en ocasiones anteriores, el superintendente de la Policía, Pedro Toledo, aseguró que la Policía no va a participar en la remoción de manifestantes en terreno federal y recalcó que esa labor recae sobre los federales, particularmente sobre la ofi
cina de los alguaciles.
“NOSOTROS NO sabemos ni tenemos fecha ni se nos ha informado fecha ninguna de
cuándo si va a haber arrestos o remociones”, dijo al recalcar que la labor de la Policía será garantizar que el acceso al Camp García no sea obstruido en la parte que pertenece al Gobierno estatal.
A pesar de su cautela al hablar, la información que ofreció de una reunión
reciente con el jefe de los alguaciles en Puerto Rico, Herman Wirshing, y de
otra reunión “de cortesía” con el oficial naval Kevin Green -encargado de
poner en vigor las directrices presidenciales que permiten la reanudación de los bombardeos – sólo abonó a robustecer las versiones sobre la inminencia de arrestos o remoción de los manifestantes.
FUENTES DEL Gobierno insistieron ayer en que no se removería a los desobedientes en los campos de tiro y que la Marina sólo se propone desalojar a los manifestantes que han ocupado una franja de terreno federal frente al portón de Camp García y extender la verja hasta los límites de la propiedad federal. La fecha señalada, antes del jueves, se debe a que durante los fines de semana aumenta la presencia en Vieques de estudiantes, visitantes y actividades antibélicas.
Los manifestantes frente a Camp García, aunque en terreno federal, no
obstaculizan directamente las prácticas de tiro, que se realizan en la zona
de impacto al este de Vieques, donde ubica, entre otros, el campamento del
presidente del Partido Independentista, Rubén Berríos.
Previo a los informes de ayer, la Marina informó que se propone realizar
ejercicios militares en mayo pero no ha indicado si sería sobre suelo viequense.
Los vuelos comerciales sobre partes de la Isla Nena se restringieron
nuevamente y hay un creciente movimiento de helicópteros sobre los campamentos.
Una intervención de las autoridades en esta fecha parece coincidir con el
aniversario de la muerte de David Sanes
Toledo aceptó que estaría impedido de revelar o confirmar si hubiera alguna
movilización federal en los campamentos esta semana. No obstante, puntualizó:
“Si hubiera alguna, yo desconozco. A nosotros no nos han informado que vaya a
haber alguna movilización en los campamentos”.
De ordinario, es común ver cerca del lugar donde falleció Sanes un helicóptero que llegue dos veces al día con personal para reemplazar al que
se encuentran de servicio. Ayer, una fuente de El Nuevo Día dijo que vio
llegar más de cinco helicópteros con personal, que sólo dejaban gente y no
retiraban a nadie.
SIN EMBARGO, confrontado con las versiones de mayor movimiento en Camp
García, el portavoz de la Marina en la base Roosevelt Roads, Roberto Nelson,
dijo que “lo único” que podía responder es que cualquier plan de desalojo de
los desobedientes civiles lo llevarán a cabo las agencias federales de ley y
orden, pero que “personalmente” no tiene “ningún conocimiento” de una
operación inminente.
Por su parte, Wirshing, quien en el pasado ha reconocido que su oficina
tendría un papel protagónico en cualquier operación de esta naturaleza, no estuvo disponible cuando El Nuevo Día intentó comunicarse con él en horas de
la tarde.
Mientras tanto, el teniente William Sierra Maya, director de la Unidad de
Saturación de la Policía en Carolina, descartó rumores de que efectivos de su
división vayan a ser enviados a Vieques en el transcurso de esta semana.
“YO AQUI no he recibido ninguna instrucción sobre eso. Hasta el momento todo sigue normal”, indicó el teniente policiaco.

WASHINGTON – Presintiendo que “esta vez podría llegar el lobo”, el Fondo
Puertorriqueño de Educación y Servicios Legales en la Ciudad de Nueva York
solicitó una reunión con la secretaria de Justicia, Janet Reno, para pedirle
que se abstenga de dar la orden de arrestos y evite más tragedias en la Isla Nena.
La reunión fue solicitada mediante carta por el director ejecutivo del Fondo,
el licenciado Juan Figueroa. Este espera reunirse con Reno a principios de
este mes, junto a un grupo de defensores de Vieques en los Estados Unidos, se
indicó.
La concejal puertorriqueña de Nueva York, Margarita López, dijo ayer que ha
escuchado que los arrestos son inminentes. Comentó que los bombardeos Unitas que las fuerzas navales realizarán desde el viernes a 12 millas de Vieques son el principio del regreso de la Marina a Vieques. “Eso es una amenaza al pueblo puertorriqueño. Es su forma de empezar los bombardeos”, expresó López. Esta tiene que comparecer hoy martes a una corte en Nueva York para responder por su desobediencia civil a favor de Vieques. La Casa Blanca refirió anoche al Departamento de Justicia federal las preguntas sobre si en estos días habría arrestos de los desobedientes civiles en el área restringida de Vieques. Al cierre de esta edición, Justicia no había emitido comentarios.
Una fuente federal dijo que los rumores de los arrestos o de remoción de los
desobedientes no son más que rumores. Pero aceptó que Justicia podría
mantener bien callada la orden de arrestos o de remoción. La Marina asistiría en el operativo. El secretario de la Marina, Richard Danzig, se encuentra en Japón desde hace una semana y regresa la semana próxima.
LOS ALGUACILES encontrarían casa llena si arrestan en estos días en Vieques.
Todavía están en Vieques parte de los participantes de la caravana del fin de
semana. En el grupo está el concejal de Nueva York, José Rivera, quien organiza la presencia viequense en el Desfile Nacional Puertorriqueño de Nueva York.
López dijo que el viernes llevará a Puerto Rico a 100 personas de Nueva York. Muchos de esos solidarios son judíos, afroamericanos y de orígenes étnicos no puertorriqueño. “Si nos arrestan vamos a dejarnos arrestar y que sea lo que Dios quiera. Si nos sueltan volvemos a entrar. Aquí no hay caminos para atrás”, dijo. En Washington siguen los preparativos para la concentración de miles de personas frente a la Casa Blanca para conmemorar el aniversario de
la muerte del guardia de seguridad David Sanes Rodríguez. Participarán 30
organizaciones que traer n gente en guaguas, aviones y carros de m s de 20
ciudades.

What are we stateside Ricans going to do when the arrests start? I’m wondering when they are going to begin attacking and ejecting those who are encamped along the target range? Will they wait for Semana Santa?

We will sit on our Culo’s just like we have done in the past when they arrest and kill our families. It seems that our community members are more concerned with self-preservation and not long term salvation. Why do you think the US has gotten away for so many years bombing US citizens, cause only a few are making a ruckus. If we were really organized and care for the community, if would be a cultural sin to be for “Statehood” based on the complete knowledge of what is Puerto Rico’s history. I feel bad for the people of Vieques and all those who have struggled hard. How come no one is bringing a class action suit against the US for destruction of the environment? Money talks, sue them and watch results happen…. Clinton’s a clown and we are really blind if we believe that there is a difference between his ideals and the Republicans. Its all about the money and Vieques is a cash cow for the military! You want to see action, Boycott the military, don’t let Latino youth join their ranks cause they are hurting for numbers right now. A good old fashion boycott, with current protest and some lawsuits, particularly in international courts should put a scare in them.
