We’re excited to have completed Politics Con Sabor, a two-year project which highlights the history of Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics in New York State politics from the late 1800’s to the present.

The pilot program was funded by a grant from the New York State Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force. Your attendance at the screening is highly encouraged. You will be entertained and enlightened by the history of Hispanic political empowerment in New York State, a truly amazing era and an experience not to be missed.

The film screening will be held on Friday, September 15 at El Museo Del Barrio on 1230 Fifth Avenue at 104th Street. We will begin with a reception at 5:00PM.

Oscar Lopez Rivera and Carlos Alberto Torres are Puerto Rican Political Prisoners and Prisoner Of War who have served over 25 years in US prisons for trying to liberate their country Puerto Rico from US colonial rule. “DOS HEROES” is a new documentary, directed by former Political Prisoner and Prisoner Of War, Dylcia Pagan, that reviews the historical development of the campaign for the release of Puerto Rican Political Prisoners from 1991 to the present. You will witness testimony of prominent leaders, religious supporters, family members of both Carlos and Oscar as well as an opportunity to learn about their lives and commitments of struggle.  “DOS HEROES” is presently in Spanish. This documentary is a personal profile of Fidel Castro and a view of the developments since the revolution teen years before. There are a lot of images of Fidel: listening to complaints, arguing, laughing and philosophizing. As he is traveling the countryside in a jeep with the film crew, he is trying to explain the Cuban revolutionary experience. There is beautiful footage of the Bay of Pigs invasion, and of Fidel and Che Guevara in the mountains. Classical made in 1969 by outstanding author and filmmaker Saul Landau.

Incluye abundante imágenes de Fidel: escuchando las peticiones de su pueblo, discutiendo, riendo y filosofando. Warm greetings from the Peace and Justice Camp, headquarters of the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques (CRDV) and Radio Vieques.

Radio Vieques is dedicated to the continuing struggle for justice and peace on Vieques: for decontamination, health services for our people who suffer from military toxics; return of our lands still in the hands of the US Federal Government; for a development in hands of our people instead of the powerful economic and political interests that displace our families.

This week we’ll have a very interesting conversation with distinguished Vieques writer, Carmelo Rodríguez Torres (Veinte siglos después del homicidio, Cinco cuentos negros, Vieques es más dulce que la sangre) about his current literary projects related to the struggles of Vieques.

Myrna Pagán (CRDV Health Commission) and Millito García (Milivy Foundation) will speak on the horrible conditions and the lack of health services in Vieques and the ‘epidemic’ of cancer that attacks our families.

Our collaborator, Ismael Guadalupe, will bring us news on the mobilization in the Santa María sector (Vieques) in defense of its beaches.

On the Youth Focus segment, Josué Cruz and Carmiann Céspedes will discuss topics that affect our youth community of Vieques. We’ll have a Momento of Vieques History, news and info. on upcoming activities.

Representatives of the group, Alliance for Ceiba’s Development, will talk by phone about the situation there as part of our process of regionalizing the demands for community/democratic development.

Filiberto: Entrevista Clandestina is an interview with Filiberto Ojeda Rios by Puerto Rican reporter Daisy Sanchez. The screening marks the first anniversary of his death at the hands of the FBI last year on September 23, a date that also commemorates El Grito de Lares.

The interview was conducted while he was in clandestine, after cutting off an electronic ankle shackle. Ojeda was on trial for his alleged involvement in the Macheteros’ Wells Fargo armored truck robbery in Hartford Connecticut. Filiberto speaks for himself and the Macheteros on the colonial issues confronting Puerto Rico.

The interview aired uncut on Puerto Rican television and was the most watched television program in the history of Puerto Rico. This film is an excerpted version of that television program.

BRAGGING RIGHTS is an hour-long video documentary that chronicles the vibrant history of the urban game of stickball through its colorful players.

Stickball has been played in the streets of New York City since the early 1920’s and is known as “the poor man’s baseball.” Stickball is the ultimate in improvising much with very little. Up until the 1960’s, hydrants, cars and sometimes old men sunning in chairs were bases. During that time, many ethnic communities that would fight each other any other day of the week, would compete on the stickball field on Sundays. Over time, racial barriers were broken and many of the players became lifelong friends.

Through the persistence and the passion of a tight-knit community brought together by tradition, the documentary chronicles what has become a national game of all family members. BRAGGING RIGHTS underscores the struggle to overcome and embrace difference and triumph over adversity.
