  2. Nuyorican Film Festival @ el Museo del Barrio

The Nuyorican Film Festival at el Museo del barrio last week was a great concept….alas, it was poorly attended. Why?

Where were all those ‘proud’ Nuyoricans? The 800,000 who live in NYC accorsding to the 2000 Census?

Maybe its time to recognize that the so-called ‘Nuyorican experience’ is no longer relevant to the 3rd generation and possibly totally irrelevant to the 4th generation.

Suggestion: take the show on the road! As a capsule of the past that no longer is…..

  3. RE: Nuyorican Film Festival @ el Museo del Barrio
Egg, wassup men…yo i feel u bout the “Nuyorican experience’ not bein relevant 2 da 3rd and 4th generation. I believe that many of our young Latinos have lost touch wit our culture. They have engulfed themselve in this new culture of urban life. Our struggle, while remaining the same is different from dat of the previous 2 generations. I believe our new generations hav lost a sense of our culture because of the culture that has engulfed us over the years. We hav 2 learn 2 adjust 2 the evolvin culture dat includes, hip-hop, rap, now reggaeton, long white-tees, braids, the block, being gansta and all dat otha good stuff..lol…just like the first 2 generations, a struggle for self identity is surely evident..we longer stand up for wat we believe in, no longer do we make our voices heard in a positive way, politics means nutten to us (the 3rd generation). Things don’t mean the same to this generation. We feel helpless and unherd, so we make the best of wat we have wit out knowing all our options. role models, positive ones anyway, no longer exist, o go unnoticed to tell u the truth. i too have realized this growin problem ova the years. The passin down of our language is also gettin lost. Speakin spanish is not sumthing that is down to often outside the house. i can talk bout this topic for hrs., but i won’t. I think the bottle line is that as we try to find our own identity as the 3rd generation, while being products of 2 cultures, we struggle in a tug-o-war. We spend so much time trying to figure out wat side of the rope to pull on that we can’t appreciate our history. We must know our history, pioneers, and the real struggles in order to fully appreciate ourselves, as well as our culture. It is up to those of us who are in touch wit our Latino culture to push the envelope. We need to put every aspect of our culture in the face of this generation and especially the ones to come. We need to help make them aware of the beauty of our language, color, flavor, food and music basically our culture…

I know i rambled on but i passionately feel fo this topic…if something isn’t done soon, we might lose ourselves in this arrognant, capitalistic culture.

I don’t know which show or shows you attended but I was there for the panel and it was well-attended. It appears that El Museo is a place that doesn’t attract filmgoers. The panel led by the curator was informative — not only of the Nuyorican experience but of the Latino experience of the New York City and beyond so that I don’t see Nuyorican Cinema as irrelevant at all. In fact, it was the younger or youngest member of the panel, a woman, who actually described herself as Nuyorican and attempted a definition.

I like your suggestion of taking “the show on the road.” The curator, Judith Escalona, who moderated the panel, said she was planning to take the film program to Paris next year and other parts of Europe. But I don’t see the films as relics of the past at all. You should look at her essay on this website.

  5. On the money!
DatNigga, you’re absolutely right! As usual, the people (the 800,000 proud Nuyoricans) never got the information about the festival. I ran into a few of them who said they definitely would have gone had they known about it for precisely the reasons you offer. It’s empowering for us to know our history and direction for future. And it is precisely because we are third and fourth generation in the U.S. that it is important or relevant for us.

But as with art, theater or literature in general, only a portion of any population will appreciate their value. Others find satisfaction and some sort of fullfillment watching commercial television. Here, we’re talking not just of Nuyoricans but a great many people unfortunately.

  6. The festival was informative and exciting
I really enjoyed seeing these films again and some of the newer additions. The festival should tour and it’s certainly great to see the clips of the films and read the essays online.

  7. The latest Nuyorican film VOTE FOR ME! will screen
VOTE FOR ME! will screen in White Park, on East 106th Street, between Lexington Avenue and 3rd Avenue, Saturday, August 30 at sunset. It’s the latest Nuyorican film and it is excellent. A very funny and astute satire of New York City politics, focussing on el Barrio.

It will soon become a part of the online clips as well as tour as part of our package. Thank you all for your comments.

How wonderful! I wish I would’ve known about this earlier.

  11. Nuyorican Experience Alive and Kicking
I think the Nuyorican experience is very relevant to our gente and particularly this youth generation. When you tour and speak to other Latinos and members of the African Diaspora, and see young peoples faces light up when they hear Nuyorican literature or history, it shows you the power of culture. So, should we take it on the road? Yes, but its already there. The problem is on finding real folks to bank roll and support these National projects. There are people doing things here and there, but until you get the Nuyorican movement more together on a larger scale, you’re not going to see the full power that those possessed with ganas and cultura can have on our community. As long as we keep letting Hollywood and ignorant folks make trash movies like “Pinero”, “Empire”, “Undefeated” or “Chasing Papi” and telling us that this is our experience, we will continue to see youth caught up in a cycle of materialism. If you want to see the Nuyorican Experience and its relevance to our generation, check out “ACENTOS” at Bar 13. Now that’s a show that’s usually well attended and is having an impact on Nuyoricans and Latinos abroad. Or visit the African-American Caribbean Cultural Institute in NYC founded by Martha Moreno Vega, another place where not just Nuyorican, but Afro-Caribbean culture empowers our people. Or even better yet, take a walk down Division St. in Chicago. Now that’s Nuyorican, Puerto Rican Power but in the Mid-West. Go listen to young folks sing and dance Bomba and Plean at Batey Urbano or see the Puerto Rican walk of Fame. I tell you, its great to be alive today!!!! There are folks pushing this culture and doing things that are empowering. Check out La Bruja and her one woman show or TAT’s Cru’s pieces in the Bronx or James DE La VEGA mural in Spanish Harlem and the LES. If we could just get rid of those few “Player Haters” who always try to hold us down, then maybe, just maybe, our young folks would have a chance to overcome all this bullsh–!. AS for films, give me a budget, some talented film students from NYC or Columbia, the equipment, and I could probably make a better film then some of the junk that is being released in theaters today. Tell real stories, with real people, that don’t always have happy endings but at least leave you feeling overjoyed that you were born with so much cultura, while others have none. Props to Judith for creating this site and letting folks work to create dialogues that help instead of creating problems. Pa’lante!
