My Dad who took after his Indian Mom said it skipped a generation because my brothers took after his Dad who was a Spaniard. So we were at the receiving end of a lot of remarks similar to the ones you've received. For instance, a guy at work about two month ago commented that I didn't look Puerto Rican (this use to anger me because I've always thought I look very Puerto Rican) and I have had people not believe me when I've introduce them to one of my brothers (I laugh at that one because I can see how they might not see the resemblance).
