VIEQUES ELECTION RESULTS

Finally in closing, let me talk about one of the most interesting local races -- Vieques. The last mayor of Vieques, Mañuela Santiago, was pro-statehood. She was PNP. The Popular candidate pulled 65% of the vote. The pro-statehood PNP got 32% of the vote. The independence party despite being on the beaches of Vieques, having its encampment next to the churches, to the civic organizations, etc. , etc. Their candidate for mayor got 4% of the vote. If there was a protest. If there was a nationalist protest, if you will, it went towards an autonomous party and not towards a separatist party.
