RETURN MIGRANTS AND POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN PUERTO RICO
Guest Speaker: Carlos Vargas Ramos

PUERTO RICANS CONTACT ELECTED OFFICIALS LESS FREQUENTLY

Following voting, contacting elected officials is the mode of political participation most Puerto Ricans in the United States engage in the most. About 20% of the sample approached an elected representative either in person, through telephone or a letter regarding a concern. This concern may have been particular in nature, particular to the individual, or specific to a larger population or group.

While this is the second most common politcal activity among Puerto Rican respondents in the survey, the rate of participation is noticeably lower than voting. Moreover, as with voting, the rate at which Puerto Ricans contact their elected officials is lower than the rate for other groups with the exception of other Latinos.
